Multiply that by 8 for the number of bits. My ALAC files come in the range 800,000 to 900,000 bits per second, or thereabouts. So that 3 million byte buffer represents about 28 to 32 seconds of ALAC audio. Which is in the same ballpark as the timing you have noted.
