I use folder browsing a lot, because for me it's the most similar way to browsing the records in a store, without looking specifically for a performer or composer. Couldn't it be programmed in a simple way, showing instead of the folder icon the file "folder.jpg" or "cover.jpg", if it exists? And if not, keep the folder icon.
