The silence with ffplay was fault on my end - s/w update changed default
audio.

I have done any debugging.

IIRC According to Apple & RFC HLS streams are supposed to have MIME as 

audio/mpegurl
application/vnd.apple.mpegurl    

My plugin also supports audio/x-mpegurl.  
These stream have application/x-mpegURL .  
The RFC says MIME types are case sensitive so I think these streams are
incompatible for 2 reasons but HLS is notorious for poor compliance.
