I think it should do DHCP personally. Someone who has a home LAN these days will either have DHCP (set up themselves or provided by something like a Linksys gateway/hub combo) or will have an understanding of dotted quad IPs. I would not assume that something like a lynksys (or even a software deamon) will support bootp all the time. As for something custom for people with none of the above, if the unit can't get a DHCP response it can then do something custom. What that would be I don't know. It should in any case ask you about manually vs. automatic config before going about its business.
