Yes, it does go to the next line. However, this behavior is undocumented
and we don't use it - we explicitly tell it to go to the next line.

Note that on the smaller displays (eg 20x2) it does not go to the next
line until you write 20 characters past the end of the first line. It
behaves just like the 40x2 controller, as if there were 20 additional
"hidden"  characters.

Are you using ASCII or graphics to generate output?
