RE: xAP - a lightweight Home Automation protocol

very friendly , a really nice community although occasionally goes OT a bit
- there are several lists but the main one is busy - maybe 100 posts a day
so be warned. They are all great SliMP3 fans.

 

            I have written a xAP to C-Bus gateway (currently utilising
C-Gate) and am awaiting the C-Bus SIM developer's kit to look at the option
of implementing xAP in a PIC controller. (xAP PIC code already exists). The
gateway supports bi-directional reporting and control so now can link almost
any xAP capable device to switch loads C-Bus or report on status. Likewise
any C-Bus event eg a load change can display a message on the SliMP3 or
control any PC accessible resource eg generic IR send etc - struggling with
the C-Bus temp and light sensors though as they don't map to a C-Bus group.
Would be really nice to be able to use the C-Touch controllers to also
control the SliMP3's and display track information eh !

 

            Anyway don't want to abuse / wonder too far OT for this group so
if you want to talk C-Bus see you on UKHA or contact me directly. There has
been quite a lot of recent C-Bus talk on there - have a search on Yahoo.

Where does the UK HomeAutomation group hang out ?? - I looked at the xap
website but could not see any general stuff.

 

I'm a certified C-Bus integrator so would be interested to find out what
people are doing with it

 

I've also got YAC running on my Slimp - had to buy an old Pace modem to get
it to work though :)

      As an offshoot of a need to exchange information between many
disparate devices in a typical Home Automation environment the UK
HomeAutomation group has evolved a splinter group to create an 'open'
protocol called xAP. This is a lightweight UDP broadcast protocol aimed at
exchanging information between devices like displays, security systems,
keypads, IR, heating and climate control, X10, C-Bus Lighting, audio
systems, CallerID, Video recorders, etc etc. 
      The protocol is very easy to implement and device connectors can be
coded by the typical hobbyist programmer. This was one of the goals cf more
complex solutions like UPNP. If anyone is looking for a potential solution
as to how to send information around their own networks in a way that many
different devices can intercept and use then I encourage you to take a look
at www.xapautomation.org . SDK's and sample code all available gratis.
      I have posted this here at the suggestion of Dean because the SliMP3
has become a firm favourite of the UKHA community (over a hundred users) and
xAP support for SliMP3 would be a much desired feature. To be able to
support control of the player via xAP messages and more importantly for the
SliMP3 to provide realtime 'Status' broadcasts detailing current track, next
in playlist, IR code received etc would be a really neat feature.
Additionally the SliMP3 could be used as a display device for all this other
information, allowing the SliMP3 to provide many HA control (through IR) and
display features.
      I am aware there is already a YAC implementation for SliMP3 and here
we already have a xAP display connector for SliMP3 (using the http api) for
CallerID, email, clock  and temperature display etc but unfortunately not a
lot of Perl experience. If anyone would be interested in helping with any
SliMP3 Perl based experience please get in touch - otherwise it's a bit of
bedtime reading of my new Perl book.
