What features shall be handled by SLiMP3 and what features shouldn't?

Is there anyone that have been thinking of where this project will 
end, how it might look in a distance future?

Everyday new lovely features are being checked in to the CVS. Like 
small ants alot and alot of people drag there straw to the stack and 
we now have a very competent, advanced and full featured server for 
our SLiMP3 devices.

But there is always more to be done, someone wants more X10 
integration, others want password protection...

I'm not a perl developer but consider me as a experienced programmer 
started with Turbo Pascal back in the early 90's and went the pascal-
>c++->java path where I'm standing right now.

With that in my luggage I do have done som re-programming of the 
SLiMP3 software, not very easy - new language and new architecture...

What comes to my mind is that perhaps the SLiMP3 server project is 
growing to very fast and might end up in a coloss, not manageable by 
just a few.

The software is distributed under the GNU license so it's free for 
everyone to start a new dev-branch, but instead it might be of 
interest to raise this issue and start a discussion on what feature 
the SLIMP3 server itself should contain and what parts would be 
better to leave to 3rd party software.

In my mind right now I have the password protection of the web-
pages, that's for sure is a nice feature, but in my opinion that 
shouldn't be taken care of by the SLIMP3 server, instead another web-
server should be fronting the user, one that can handle the user 
authorization by regular passwd files, but also with some kind of 
directory through LDAP or equal.

Also I think it would be good to focus more on the API than on the 
wizzle&bells part of the todo-list. The more nice-to-have-features 
that gets into the code the harder it would be to port the software, 
change architecture or document it.

Just my 5 cents...
