Hi - I just joined the dev group. At Dean's suggestion I'm reposting
this message, which I originally sent to the users group. Apologies to
those who get it twice.

Cheers

Please see http://www.ibamba.net/slimp3 for a (non-functional) mockup of
a web interface that I'd like to see for the SLIMP3. The SLIMP3 client
interface is brilliant, but I think the web interface parallels the
client's one-dimensional universe more closely than is necessary; I'd
like a richer web interface that takes full advantage of desktop
environment.

I'm a web developer & interface designer, but I don't work in Perl. I'd
be glad to work together with someone to develop this. I don't know how
much of this can be accomplished within the current skinning framework,
and how much would require changes to the server code.

Some notes:

- The "Music Library" frame would optionally load the whole library at
once (i.e. no paging). I find paging a nuisance, but this could be
user-configurable. In my case (8000+ tracks) this would probably be over
a 1MB page, but even so it shouldn't be a big deal over a LAN.

- Nodes in the hierarchy would open/close on the client (DHTML) with no
server round-trip required; the whole library would load the first time,
and then just stay in memory.

- The music library hierarchy would be organized according to the
options in the "View by" drop-down menu (i.e. Genre:Album, Artist:Album,
Artist, etc.)

- Selecting an item from the "View by" menu (or entering something into
the "Search" box) would automatically reload the frame.

- The hierarchy could potentially go two-three levels deep. For example,
if I was viewing by "Genre:Album" I might have this:

...+ Blues
...+ Brazilian
...- Jazz
......+ Bitches Brew | Miles Davis
......+ In a Silent Way | Miles Davis
......- Kind of Blue | Miles Davis
.........So What
.........Freddie Freeloader
.........Blue in Green
.........All Blues
.........Flamenco Sketches
......+ Saturday Night at the Blackhawk
...+ Rock
...+ etc.

- I want to be able to have any number of albums/genres/etc. expanded at
any given time, à la Windows Explorer.

- I would want to be able to click column heads (Genre, Album, Artist,
etc.) to sort the listing. The "view by" menu would determine the
grouping structure; the column heads would determine the sort order.
These aren't necessarily the same - I generally want a list of albums,
but in alphabetical order by artist.

Cheers
Herb
