If you assume a browser capable of DHTML and Javascript then this is
both possible and practical.

For a live example, create a login for yourself on kuro5hin.org (if you
don't have one already, go to "Comment-Prefernces" and put a + in the
field for "Dynamic threaded".

This will load the comments as a collapsed tree, and then dynamically
expand the branch you click on. *without* reloading the entire page. (it
fetches from the server only the newly expanded branch)

If you collpase a branch, and then re-expand it the same data are *not*
fetched a second time. The code for this is part of "Scoop" an GPLed
news-site thingie (similar to slashdot, but with more of a proper design
and less of kilometers of duct-tape and wire.)
