should keep it for this purpose.

This isn't exactly true, it doesn't keep a complete list of all
the files at any time. But it does cache the file information
and directory information, and this cache is used when you try to play
all.

That said, it could be substantially faster. Like
instantaneous.

I'll file a bug and we'll try to fix it for the next
release.
