Re: 486 server?

Um, I'm running it on a P100 (granted, my MP3s are on a windows box,
mounted via samba), and I wouldn't say that it is "just fine". Everything
works pretty well, but I did have to turn on the "throttling" of background
scanning.

Going to a large directory takes long enough to make it seem like it
doesn't know you pressed a button (but it does come up w/o killing the
tunes). The same goes for the Albums view, and the Artists
view. Scrolling up and down in those views is also like molasses (i.e. I
get virtually no "gradual acceleration", like I do in the MusicLibrary view).

Things have gotten a /lot/ better with the recent versions of the software,
and I no longer have plans to move the server off the P100. It's sluggish
in spots, but definitely bearable. And I expect it to improve.

If you are going to run it on a 486, tho, I figure you'll be mounting your
mp3s over the network, and thus be in a similar situation to mine. (Since,
most 486 mobos couldn't handle "big" IDE drives, and that was when big was
<10 gigs).

Anybody remember how 486s compared in speed to the pentiums? IIRC, there
was speed increase beyond just the MHz.

It seems like it'd be worth a shot. If it doesn't work, you'll at least be
able to use the 486 as a router. :)
