Is there a way that you can get the time remaining from a perl script
or a URL (like a curl or wget) on the command line?

Not yet, but it would be easy to add. If you know perl, I
could tell you where to look in the server code to add it, otherwise,
if you could add it to the feature request list on SourceForge, we'd
have it for you as soon as possible.
