If I have 2 drives chuck full of MP3's could it see this as just

one big chunk of files. I would rather not merge the drives for

since if one drive goes out it does not effect the other.

Yes. You can have one directory that you specify for the SliMP3
server and put soft links or shortcuts to the other directories that
you want to include.

Does it handle high VBR
rates

(I am currently encoding with Lame with
"--alt-preset extreme"

Yes, however there have been some reports with problems decoding
320kbps MP3 files. My library is full of highest bitrate
(160kbps minimum) VBR files which average about 250kbps. I've
never had a problem

Does it have a way to mark a bad MP3 -
bad as in a problem spot with

the remote

It could kick it out to a flat file and I could go back and re-

encode the file

Not yet, but that's a good idea to submit as a feature request to
the open source server project.

does it have a way to rank songs as they
are being played with the

remote

So, if you hear a song and Rank it a 1 for bad or 5 for Great

could you play just those "Rock" songs with a Rank of 3 or
better

or whatever you want.

Not yet, but the idea has been discussed and will probably get
implemented in the future.

If not, could it be programmed to do
this

by saving the Rank in ID3, or does ID3
not allow something like this.

That, I think, depends on which version of ID3 your files have.
Right now the server doesn't edit or change your ID3 tag information,
but it may do so in the future.

can you play the same tunes on all the
slimdevices

Multiple SliMP3s using one server can all play the same tunes,
but they aren't synchronized yet. This is a planned version for
the next major release of the software.

what about also the same time as WinAmp
and a Slimdevice

Absolutely. The SliMP3 server doesn't touch your MP3 files
and builds an index of them when it starts up. If you move files
underneath it while it's running it might not be able to find them
unless you try to play them specifically.
