I think you mentioned that you were using WinXP, so this might help.

I had a similar problem between my slimp3 and my Win2K box for a 
while, where the server and the client would seem to work OK for a 
while, then just stop talking to each other.  

Turns out the problem was that I was running ZoneAlarm, the personal 
firewall software.  For some reason or other, ZoneAlarm would let 
*some* packets through from the client.  If you're running XP's built-
in firewall, you might be seeing a similar effect.

I fixed the ZoneAlarm issue by going to Security->Advanced and adding 
the slimp3's IP address to the "other computers in the local zone" 
list.  No problems since.
