Also, when I specify the path to the folder with the music, I've also noticed that when I use the 3.1b2 server with it set to startup at boot, the server starts, but then stops again when I log in. That is to say, the display on the SLIMP3 comes on, then goes off again when I log in. If I access the server via System Preferences it indicates that it's running. If I stop and restart it there, it seems to behave normally. (Aside from my missing songs.) The permissions all seem to be the same, but I just noticed that the songs that aren't recognized don't have the extension .mp3. This wasn't a problem before. Did something change in the server?
