Loud Pop when starting a music selection or radio station

Just upgraded my Mac to OSX 10.2.4 and when I fired up the Slimp3 and selected an album I get a very loud pop from the speakers - so loud I am worried it may have damaged them. The music then starts playing - albeit with audible clicks between songs, but I have gotten used to those over the last year.. I then upgraded to the latest firmware and the 3.1b2 SW with no change in behavior. My setup is an amp with the MP3 connected to it and a pair of speakers... Any suggestions?
