Sometimes the E! expansions work loose or are seating improperly. You could simply try pressing down on it while you boot and see if that helps. Or remove and re-install.

If you want to do an E!-ectomy then you will probably need the original SRAMs as well. They aren't impossible to find but do not substitute with a run-of-the-mill SRAM because the originals are not. I would not worry about the crystal or any of the myriad of possibilities. It's almost certainly something to do with the expansion. You might need a new battery as well, but that you can worry about after you get the sign-on message happening.
