In addition to Glenn's notes, I just thought I'd add that Microsoft,
Intel, and the big entertainment companies are all pushing this.  They
are continually trying to get enshrined in US law (probably other
countries too).  Whatever happens legally, they'll implement it anyway.
Since it will be in hardware (the Intel part), there will eventually be
no way to bypass it.  (It will probably be impossible to install free
operating systems like GNU/Linux on such hardware, too.)

I believe AMD (the only significant competitor to Intel) has also agreed
to implement it.  There is at least a plausible case that falling into
line on DRM is one big reason why Steve Jobs decided to move to Intel
chips for Macs.

If anyone knows anything effective that we, as law-abiding "consumers",
can do to oppose all this, I'd love to know about it.  Let's all give
three cheers for huge monopolies and globalization.  Sigh.


Enough of that.  My wife Mare and I (we met on this list :) are hoping
to go see Jane in Seattle at the Triple Door (thetripledoor.net).  Has
anyone on this list ever been to that venue?  It seems to be a
combination dinner + music kind of place.  We're a lot bit worried about
hearing Jane rather than other people ordering and eating and ...
