So, the other day I was listening to some Supertramp (Crime of the Century, Breakfast in America) and noting (as I've noted before) how unusual their subject matter is, the case that there is so much confusion, insecurity, madness in their songs. As in: Am I super? Jolly supah?? Or am I just a tramp? Ah, the eternal question! Also the confusing contrast between being a celebrity rock star..., then getting off stage and feeling... out of it. This then brought to mind the element of confusion in our Jane's The Walking. It's an album than comes out of a period of distress, confusion, guilt. Look at how out of focus and unhappy she looks on the cover. Poor Jane! But her stress and confusion give it intensity and richness... Meanwhile, as she comes to recognize more & more as to what she's about... being a Christian?... her songs become less intense, less confused, more simple. Issa knows which way her spaceship is headed, n'est-ce pas? That's my guess. Her confusion also came out then in songs that involve different voice /personas within one song. Instead of being a coherent person..., she assumes different voices. As in the first and the last songs. In between we have the songs which are the most straightforward, direct, personal, as to how stressed our dear Jane was: Goodbye, the Lobby (which is also about her sister, yes? It was her sister than went into the lobby, three different times in succession... trying to get it right...?), the Walking... And endlessly.... Her thoughts and emotions are spinning by her shoulder! Her mind is not inside itself. Nor her heart. Brood M
