Ben, Thanks for asking. New Stuff: My two sons have introduced me to Mars Volta which is (by far) the most interesting of the "music of youth today" that they have forced upon me, retro-Dad. It's aggressively prog, with wild vocals. Stratospheric falsetto! I have no idea what he's singing about, & probably happier not knowing. Old, & something completely different: I've tracked down some important pre-history for the breathy bossa style, that wispy voice + acoustic guitar combo, back to a very influential album by Julie London (her first) with Barney Kessel, jazz guitarist. "Julie is her name," around 1955. Just the two of them. Her voice is not big, and so she's doing this breathy highly miked style... that was a real eye-opener & eye-opener down in Brazil. London's approach is nowhere near as breathy (and the melodies are not so chromatic), but you can see how it was an influence. Tell me what you think of Kate's newest. I've been kinda bummed & sulky ever since she brought in the infernal drum machine in "Running up that hill..." Still Haven't heard any Issa, or Jane's Xtian material. One of there years I will make a pilgrimage to Northampton, and see her in person. I'll be the one yelling for "Half Eagle, Half Angel." Until they toss me out, that is.
