Just weighing in, mostly because a friend sent me info re: Yusaf's new cd and what I thought about it a few days ago. Looking thru news items and doing a couple quickie 'searches', I came up with this bit...he's gotten too extreme, too far away... Yusuf Islam's own website further reveals his fundamentalist and radical bent. It celebrates his collaboration with a notorious American Islamist, Shaikh Hamza Yusuf [Hanson]. Hamza Yusuf was known before September 11 for his radical preaching. In 1991, Hamza Yusuf "gave a provoking speech about why 'Jihad is the Only Way,'" at an International Islamic Conference held at the University of Southern California by the local unit of the Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA), a front for the al Qaeda-allied Jama'at-i-Islami movement in Pakistan. The same Los Angeles event was addressed by Imam Siraj Wahhaj, an unindicted co-conspirator named in 1995 in a plot to blow up New York City monuments.. Stephen Schwartz, an author and journalist, is author of The Two Faces of Islam: The House of Sa'ud from Tradition to Terror. A vociferous critic of Wahhabism, Schwartz is a frequent contributor to National Review, The Weekly Standard, and other publications. >>> <[email protected]> 11/15/2006 11:47 AM >>> What I have heard him say is that he was misquoted. The fact is that what we have all heard about that incident came through the media and most of us know how that goes. The man did just receive Britain's "Man of Peace Award" in 2004 a month after being refused entry to the U.S. because he was on the "No-Fly" list. So, I think it is fair to say that there are conflicting opinions of his character. The U.S. government did admit their mistake and he is no longer on that list.
