Siberry (I don't see any reason to call her Issa anymore, since even
she admits that it was kind of a passing phase for her) had been one of
my all-time favorite artists during the 80s. I had sort of lost track
of what she was doing after the Maria album and thought she had
basically dropped out of music altogether, like Kate Bush after The Red
Shoes. But here I decide to browse a bit at CD Baby, and what is the
first thing I see but a brand-new item by Jane. (So out of touch was I
that I had no knowledge of her new incarnation as Issa.) So I decide to
download it just for the heck of it. Best decision I have made all
year. This is a stunning piece of work, and a late but solid entry into
my favorite-of-the-year list. It contains all the things that made me
so fond of Jane in the 80s (I saw one of her shows in a small venue in
Dallas about 1986; this album has the same kind of intimacy), with a
few new wrinkles that helped renew my interest. And at least twice it
made me cry; not an easy thing even for someone of Jane's talent to do.
She is a middle-aged woman, now, only a few years younger than me, but
she sounds EXACTLY the same as I remember. Re-discovery, it seems, is
good for the soul.
