The best thing you can hope for is just having a bad or low quality cable.  Does situation continue if cable switched?  I have had devices not operate with dollar store cables. 

 I have had drives appear after running for while before connection.  It is a sign they are on the way out.  I hope you have your drive backed up. I always mirror my external drive, not a matter of if dying but when.  Don't want to lose all my rare TD files :)
