The director's cut is much better because so much is left out of the theatrical release that adds to the movie and why things are happening the way they are. Although the Jerry Goldsmith score is good, the music is better on the theatrical version. I say watch the director's cut then re-watch the theatrical version later.

My personal preference is the American version with the TD score - it creates a more surreal effect to the movie. While I really like Jerry Goldsmith’s music in general , in the international version, it seems more like a live-action Disney film - a little too much saccharide added. That said: too much was cut from the American version; there needs to be some exposition to explain who’s who and what’s going on. Yeah, you can leave some things to the imagination, but you’re left asking “why” at a lot of points…

Is there a consensus as to the favorite, preferred version? I've seen the TD version many times, but have only seen the director's cut once, and don't really remember much of it. She is part of the majority in the house that doesn't like and doesn't understand my love of Tangerine Dream, so we will probably be watching the director's cut.
Any thoughts or similar experiences with a non fan and a movie?
