Yeah, I feel the same way.

I _never_ use assignments for value in predicates.  But clearly that's
not the majority view, so I didn't rewrite the code to eliminate it.

No problem.  I'm just merging in those changes I made that are
independent of the #include reorganization.  (When you are satisfied
that the reorganization is OK, I'll merge that in too.)
