Connection-level initialization on initiator side?

I need to do non-channel-specific initialization on the initiator side.  
What is the best place for this?  As far as I can tell pro_session_init() 
only happens on the Listener side, though perhaps pro_connection_init() is 
what I am looking for, perhaps called on BOTH sides, and I can check 
bp->role?
