My intended applications are not too dissimilar, basically LAN based
applications. Aiming for 1Gb+ speeds for multiple clients. Just in the 
process of drastically breaking the client to rewrite a load of stuff
but hope to have it fixed again soon.

I wouldnt bother about limiting IPs (just filter connections if you need to).
And I am not sure you need to exit once idle - if there is nothing to do there
should be no cpu load anyway.
