The performance cost of being behind a firewall

Hi all,

I have a couple of questions about the use of BitTorrent protocol with
clients that are behind firewalls and/or other NATing devices.  I know
there is a performance cost.  Does anyone have any idea how much of
one?  

My understanding is the performance hit is due to two things:
1) The list of peers that the client behind the firewall uses is
updated only when it contacts the tracker.
2) A client behind a firewall can only access other clients that are
not  behind a firewall (or have their firewall/NAT device configured
to forward packets)

Is this analysis accurate?

Does anyone know what percentage of clients out there are behind
firewalls?
