Personally, it's not so much a problem as the S:N ratio. 
Specifically, the noise (Spam, and to some extent the discussion of
the spam) is exceeding the value I get from participating.  Rightfully
or not, it drastically reduces my inclination to jump on new messages
and help out.

Just my two cents worth, and likely my last general commentary
(Although I'm happy to discuss specific issues either on or off list)
