BNR2 newbie question

Just started using BNR2 recently and I like it. But I ran into a problem. 

I imported several NZB files into it successfully and all was well
until one morning when the database hung up (error said "Couldn't read
database") and wouldn't open. I kept trying several times and finally
reinstalled and configured the program. I imported an NZB file, but
the program did nothing. I connected to the server and it stayed
connected for a short time and disconnected. I had not, up to this
point, subscribed to any newsgroups. I just wanted to import NZB
files. Is that the problem now or will it work without subscribing?
