MsgDB.bnr

I know this has been asked but I just can't seem to understand it.  
Using BNR3 but like BNR2 better.  Anyway, the database MsgDB.bnr 
is 2 GIG's, and like to reduce the size, and have it remember what 
articles were downloaded.  I tried the vacuum, and I guess it needs 
sqlite.exe ver 2 and all I can find is version 3.  I get all kinds of 
errors when I run the batch file.  

Deleting the database is no help because it reverts back to the same 
size when I refresh the groups again.  The same articles are being 
included in the refresh.

Using XP Pro SP2.
