Several binary newsgroups have twin text-only discussion groups. These
groups end with .d . For instance, alt.binaries.blabla will be
discussed in alt.binaries.blabla.d .
You may also find a specific requests group like
news:alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.requests .

To post to these text-only newsgroups a client like Mozilla
Thunderbird is what you need. You can get it from
http://www.mozilla-europe.org/en/products/thunderbird/  (note that
there is a known and filed bug with news: links in Thunderbird, don't
click on them, enter them manually).

For more information about requests, I'd suggest
http://www.mp3-faq.org/faq2.html . Also, for more information on
Usenet, http://dmoz.org/Computers/Usenet/ would be a good starting
point. Look for sites providing information on binary newsgroups.
