> The problem is I can't leave my PC unprotected >like that. "This is something I quite simply will never understand. Why do people feel they need to let anti-virus software run all the time?" Because people have varying levels of skill and ability. Depending on how the computer is used it is more advantageous to keep it running so that you don't have to worry about it. I'll tell you this, there's no way I'm letting my mom's computer run without one. Trying to teach her safe computing is fairly useless so at least she has some protection. Same with Spyware. "Scan an unknown executable before you run it; don't let your web browser run every script it encounters; don't use unsafe internet software in the first place (Internet Explorer, Outlook Express), unless you've learned its shortcomings (and fixed them); and, don't click every stupid banner warning you "your computer is in danger!" All good advice but not practical in every situation and environment. Nor for every person. "At any rate, have you Read The Fricking Manual?" "Or... is it a matter of "other people" using your computer... (even if that's the case, there is a better way, than letting a virus scanner run resident at at times. This is a natural performance killer, and compromises your computer's stability.)" If you use Norton its definitely a performance killer. Nod32 doesn't impact the system much at all. As with many things it just depends on how the computer is used, the environment and by whom. If you run a decent anti-virus program you don't even notice any performance drop which I don't and I leave nod32 running. I've only had it catch 1 or 2 because I do practice fairly safe computing so I'm not at high risk for viruses but still nice to have. It's a security thing. I moved from NYC the bronx to a small town while I was going to college. Folks left their doors unlocked all the time. We didn't even though we could have.
