Answering my own question here. Someone suggested RTFM, but I can tell you that the way the organize their documentation leaves a lot to be desired, Eventually I found it by searching on keyword "exclusion" in their help text. It found the instructions on how to set up exclusions, but not until I tried it did it show me the folder locations to be excluded. So in a way, you had to already know the answer in order to be able to easily find it in the documentation. I had seen exclusions before, but only when it prompted me to add individual executables to the 'trusted zone'. once again VERY intuitively obvious...
