The basic philosophy behind much of this software is to speed things up. Threading was an attempt to do this. Now obviously this will depend on how you use it. If you are going through small groups then you won't really see a ton of benefit. But if you are going through one of the larger binary groups then you want ways to cut down the amount of time spent browsing through things. And before you mention nzbs they are great when you already know what you are looking for. But when you're just browsing through they don't help.

So the thread grouping was to cut down the amount of browsing time spent. It does that but just needs to be tightened up because for now you get articles grouped that shouldn't be. I'd rather it be so tight that some don't get grouped that should rather than the other way around because it can cause you to miss articles.

Anyway, that was the thought behind that sort of things. Patrick was continuing his efforts to make BNR a tool that helps speed things up.

Although BNR3's database is fairly rock solid if you have all the safety features, journaling and such turned on it can be quite slow so most of us turn these off. This isn't a problem as long as well there isn't a problem but occasionally there may be. Again this is dependant on how you use BNR. As I mentioned I often will have it running in the background while I'm doing other stuff. So if it's downloading and my system locks up because of something else I did then there is a chance the database will get corrupted and/or the queue file will disappear.

The newsRC file was a great recovery tool. I could write one out for each of the servers I use, redownload the database and then import it. This saves me tons of time going through literally thousands of headers and re-marking them as read. So again its a feature that helped speed up a process.

This is how BNR2 works. BNR3 does not work this way. You now know two features that BNR2 has that didn't make it into the current version of BNR3.

Jeff also mentioned years ago that he was working on a new filtering system. For basic filtering what's there now is fine but when you want to do some more advanced filtering it falls short. Other programs use a scoring type system where you can have multiple conditions that all affect the score. So if I want to say something like hide this article if the size is xxx and it's in group xxxx and contains these words but not these words, etc.

And the idea once again is to cut down the time spent just browsing through stuff while still maintaining the ability to browse. Once you've browsed and you know what you want then nzb rocks.
