My recommendations are Agent (There is a free version. Used this for years), Xnews or more recently Newsman. Newsman I was considering as a replacement for BNR. It's very good and very feature rich. About the only thing that made me turn back to BNR is that Newsman seemed to be a little less tolerant of my news server's flaky connection so I'd often set it to just download headers from a bunch of groups and leave and come back to find that it was stalled with some error.

This could be just some setting that I didn't have checked because it's very powerful and flexible and I may give it a re-visit. It's the only one I'd considered as an alternative to BNR and it does text groups as well.
