As said by others, there is nothing wrong with the Linux Unix variants,
but as the only reason for the change being because you want to download
from NNTP/whatever, I cant see the reason for the change. Win2000 is the
most powerful Win32 OS there is and still has one of the longest M$
lifelines (or was the last time I had the M$ page open) with guaranteed
security updates to 3rd Q 2011 and I expect much longer.

Its my main win OS and is very secure when setup right (just like any OS)
*nix will not be any safer (if that is your reason for change) if you run
with silly settings and as root. The single most important thing with any
box connected to the interweb (connected to any other box really) is a
good and well setup firewall[s] (hardware, at least a NAT router, but the
better IDS, the better, and software, as a firewall on each computer).

As for data transfer between the win *nix boxes, NTFS support has got much
better on *nix boxes, but I use a hard drive on one of my servers that is
setup as FAT 32 and I have that 'mapped' from every box and use that as my
crossover point.

As for what distro to use, IMO just read up and find the best for you. I
use Slackware and Solaris plus a few others that I also have for playing
about with. What I do think the best way to go is to get a live CD version
and try out with that first to see what you will like or not and its an
easy way to check how well the hardware is picked up.
