Strange, my BNR has never done that...
If a "file" consists of 10 parts, 300kB each, then the file appears on 
disk as:
file.1      300kB
file.1-2   600kB
file.1-3   900kB
...
file.1-9   2700kB
file         3000kB
as it's downloaded part by part.
At the end, no disk trashing happens.

In my environment BNR starts heavy disk activity only after sitting idle 
for some time - it automatically starts expiring articles in the DB.
