We should also have to consider that distributors may use external
libraries when they have packages for them and that their versions could
mismatch ours.

Gentoo has the command 'emerge --info' which prints out certain
environment variables and versions of used packages relevant to the
build process. Users are required to provide that information on request
in order to get support.

This model could help in hunting down problems on the user side.
