OK, backported gettext from feisty, I still get the same error:
checking whether make sets $(MAKE)... yes
./configure: line 4290: AM_GNU_GETTEXT: command not found
./configure: line 4291: syntax error near unexpected token `0.16.1'
./configure: line 4291: `AM_GNU_GETTEXT_VERSION(0.16.1)'

Has anyone any hints for me?
Another error I noticed running ./configure:
./configure: line 1746: AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE: command not found
./configure: line 1748: AM_MAINTAINER_MODE: command not found
