I think I hade the same problem on my computer, because of cosmic
radiation (or something) the m4-macros for gettext, and for other
macro in /usr/share/local was not detected by the script.

So I hade to edit the script-file (or set the aproporiate system
variable, $ACLOCAL (?)).

I'm not at the right computer at the moment, so I can't tell you the
exact details.
