No, you only have to run compile. One other thought - how many levels of
directories do you have? If more than one, check you modified the
lowermost Defaults file. Attributes are inherited, if you modified the
top level Defaults file and standard-interface exists in a lower one,
your changes will be over-ridden.

You should really have a look at a tool such as
genRtrConfig/genDevConfig
(http://www.acktomic.com/cricket/cricket-genRtrConfig.htm). It would
manage all of this for you and you will probably be blown away with what
else it offers. One of it's features is that it will automatically
enable snmp v2c for interfaces 100Mb/s and over. There are a raft of
bugs on older (and not so old) versions of IOS, with the data returned
by v2c on low speed interfaces. Cisco will tell you they don't support
it on interfaces under 20Mb/s.
