You likely have a datasource definition wrong. Working example on Debian 
3.1 here:

datasource      mainboard-temp
        ds-source       =       exec:0:"/usr/share/cricket/util/mbtemp"

Post the interesting bits of your configuration if you are in doubt.

The paths should be absolute so it doesn't matter where you are when 
calling the collector. A caveat on Debian though: you need to run the 
collector as user "cricket" (give it a shell instead of /bin/false) 
because otherwise you will be mangling permissions of the RRD files.
This hint is not directly connected to your problem though.
