Further research shows that RRDs *created* with librrds-perl and rrdtool v1.0.49 (from Debian sarge) do not exhibit this behavior. Unfortunately, rrdtool v1.0.49 can't read rrdtool v1.2.15's RRDs, so I can't really test whether it's how the data is being stored vs how it's being read.
