Doh!
Ah, I see it now. I was totally missing what you were saying at first.
I made another typo earlier and received an "RPN stack underflow" error, which
is another type of RPN math error. Not too many references to it in the
archives. So, at least it will be in the archives now for all posterity just
in case someone else hits this again.
I wasn't really sure about the exponential operator (** probably does the
trick, as you mentioned), so I just did this and it works:
datasource bytecount
rrd-ds-type = COMPUTE
rrd-cdef = ds1,2,*,32*,ds0,+
