RRD version 0003 gives error

I am moving my cricket 1.05 install to a dedicated (more or less :-)
server and upgraded my rrdtool at the same time from 1.2.12 to 1.2.27.
Now I get a strange error about a version incompatibility.

"Current values not available: RRD file version 0003 not supported on
this arch."

The error comes from RRD::File.pm and is caused by
$fmt->format('liveHead3') not being defined.  As near as I can tell that
value is set in RRD::Format.pm.

OK, the weird part is that on the current machine (FC3, cricket 1.05)
the value is set for i.386 but on the new machine (5.1, cricket 1.05) it
is not.

I can add the missing line easily enough but why is it in a version I
downloaded in 2005 but missing from supposedly the same version I
downloaded a few days ago?  I cannot find anything in the Release Notes
about it.
