The CM4 might be better, since you get raw PCIe instead of USB3.

I hadn't realized there's an I/O HAT with a PCIe connector, listed at $35. 
So you could mount a standard single-lane PCIe PC card (like a dual Gigabit 
Ethernet card) to a CM4.
