Well,
I figured out how to get around this (that dreaded 'host' object is to
blame). When adding a new user, in the "Access control information" step
(the second step), unselect "Grant access to all computers in the network"
and continue on (I didn't try putting any information in, left everything
blank). However, it mentions an error adding to the group ('sandalle',
already created), but when looking at both the 'sandalle' group and
'sandalle' user, they both list the other in the correct locations (group
lists user 'sandalle' as a user and that it's his primary group, user
'sandalle' lists his group as 'sandalle').
Success

There was an LDAP error while adding this user's DN to the new group
The following entry was just added to the directory:
Entry DN: uid=sandalle,ou=group,dc=shock,dc=wsu,dc=edu
