I do support your claim that source-based distributions don't have this problem
when they are well-maintained and properly groomed, but i hold it is the same
for package-based distributions which are well-maintained and properly groomed AND:

* the package names use sensible dependency names

I prefer package-based distros because they require less work.

The advantages brought by source-based distros will also exist on package-based
distros once the distro makers agree on a sensible scheme for dependencies. 
Note I say "once they agree" and not "if they agree" because sooner or later,
that will have to happen.  It's the next evolutionary step, and the people with
UnitedLinux (not that I use one of their distros) do exactly this.
