invalid credentials

I have just installed and configured OpenLDAP v 2.0.27 on a mandrake
9.1 server.

I just cannot connect with directory administrator as root, all I get
is invalid credentials. I have tried everything in the documentation,
using http://linsec.ca/bin/view/Main/OpenLDAPAuth
this doc as my
starting point.

I include my slapd.conf:

database ldbm

suffix "dc=test,dc=net"

#suffix "o=My Organization Name,c=US"

rootdn "cn=root,dc=test,dc=net"

#rootdn "cn=Manager,o=My Organization Name,c=US"

I have made sure the plaintext password of the above hash is in
/etc/ldap.secret.

here is the error message from my ldap.log:

I assume the error 49 is the same as invalid credentials.

Has anybody any idea as to what I am doing wrong, or if I have left any
required info out ? ?
